Discovering Syros, Greece – The Island of Stairs on Our Azamara Mediterranean Cruise

When you picture a cruise through the Mediterranean, it’s easy to think of the big-name destinations like Santorini, Mykonos, or Athens. But on our recent Azamara cruise, one of the ports that truly captured our hearts wasn’t one of the famous ones—it was Syros, Greece.

They call Syros the Island of Stairs, and by the end of the day, we completely understood why. From sparkling marble streets to pastel buildings climbing up the hillside, this island has a quiet charm that feels both authentic and timeless.

A Perfect Arrival in Syros, Greece

Our ship anchored in the beautiful port of Ermoupolis, the capital of Syros. It’s smaller and less crowded than other Greek islands, which immediately gave us that laid-back, local feel Azamara is known for. With fewer than 700 passengers on board, it’s easy to step off and start exploring without the crowds you find with bigger ships.

Ermoupolis is picture-perfect. The pastel-colored homes, the neoclassical buildings, and the small cafés tucked along the waterfront—everything about it invites you to slow down and soak it in.

We started our morning in Miaouli Square, right in the heart of the town. The square is wide and elegant, surrounded by marble buildings and buzzing with life. From there, we decided to take on the challenge everyone talks about—climbing the many steps up to the Church of the Resurrection of Christ.

Climbing to the Church of the Resurrection

The streets of Syros are something to see. They’re made of a polished stone that gives them this gleaming, almost mosaic look. Beautiful? Absolutely. But also… a little slippery! Let’s just say this is not the island for flimsy flip-flops.

The climb itself winds through narrow alleys and staircases that seem to twist endlessly upward. Every turn offers a new view—a blue door framed with flowers, a cat napping in a window, or a sudden peek at the sea below.

By the time we reached the Church of the Resurrection, we were out of breath but completely in awe. The view from the top was spectacular—Ermoupolis stretched out below us, the port glimmering in the distance, and the Azamara ship anchored like a tiny white jewel in the Aegean. We just stood there, catching our breath and taking it all in.

This was the kind of moment that makes a Mediterranean cruise so special—you never know when a quiet morning walk will turn into a memory you’ll never forget.

Getting Lost in the Side Streets

On the way back down, we decided to skip the main route and wander through the side streets instead. This ended up being one of the best decisions of the day.

We found ourselves weaving through small alleys, some no wider than our shoulders, lined with bright shutters and potted plants. Locals passed by on scooters, and we caught the faint scent of coffee and fresh bread from tiny bakeries. It felt like stepping into everyday life in Syros—unhurried, friendly, and full of charm.

Somewhere along the way, we stumbled across the Church of Saint Nicholas, one of the most beautiful Greek Orthodox churches we’ve ever seen. The blue domes, ornate icons, and peaceful atmosphere were incredible. It’s one of those places that makes you stop talking for a moment and just look around.

A Sweet Ending at Athymartes

After all that walking and stair climbing, we decided it was time for something sweet—and what’s more fitting in Greece than baklava?

We asked a local for a recommendation and were pointed toward Athymarites, a small pastry shop tucked away not far from the port. The second we stepped inside, the smell of honey, nuts, and warm pastry hit us. The glass cases were filled with every type of sweet you could imagine—baklava, ice cream, cakes, cookies, and more.

We each chose something different, and every bite was pure heaven. If you ever find yourself in Syros, Greece, do yourself a favor and stop at Athymartes. It’s the kind of hidden gem that turns a good day into a perfect one.

Why Syros Deserves a Spot on Your Mediterranean Cruise

One of the things I love about Azamara is their ability to visit these smaller, lesser-known islands that the big ships can’t reach. Syros is a perfect example. It’s not flashy or crowded, but it’s full of personality, culture, and warmth.

You won’t find huge shopping streets or chain restaurants here—instead, you’ll discover cobblestone lanes, local bakeries, and people who greet you with a smile. It’s real Greece.

When people ask me about our Azamara Mediterranean cruise, I always mention Syros. It’s the kind of destination that reminds you why small-ship cruising is so special—less hustle, more heart, and memories that feel personal.

Travel Tips for Visiting Syros

  • Wear good walking shoes. Those polished stone streets and steep staircases are beautiful, but they’re not easy on slick soles.

  • Bring your camera. From Miaouli Square to the hilltop views at the Church of the Resurrection, every turn is photo-worthy.

  • Take your time. Don’t rush to check off sights—Syros is best experienced slowly, with time to wander and discover.

  • Try the sweets. Seriously—stop at Athymartes for baklava or anything they recommend. You won’t regret it.

Final Thoughts

Our day in Syros, Greece was one of those perfect travel moments—unplanned, authentic, and unforgettable. We climbed, we wandered, we tasted, and we left feeling like we’d found something special.

That’s the magic of an Azamara Mediterranean cruise. It’s not just about the famous destinations—it’s about the hidden treasures, the quiet streets, and the moments that take you by surprise.

So if you ever find yourself sailing the Aegean with Azamara, don’t underestimate Syros. Climb the stairs, explore the side streets, and save room for dessert. You’ll be glad you did.
