Rhodes Old Town Adventure with Azamara

Wandering Through Rhodes – A Day to Remember
On August 17, our Azamara Cruise carried us to our fifth port—Rhodes, Greece. From the moment we stepped off the ship, it felt like we had stepped back in time.
We passed through the towering gates of Old Town, and it stopped us in our tracks. Surrounded by three massive exterior walls, the city looked impenetrable, like a fortress built to withstand anything. Inside, we wandered into a maze of narrow streets lined with ancient stone houses, each corner tugging us further into the past.
The streets themselves were unlike anything we’d ever walked on—river rocks placed on their edges instead of flat. They were stunning to see but rough on our feet after a while. We kept thinking about the work it must have taken to place each stone that way, one by one. With every step, our footsteps echoed, and it felt like the city was telling us its story as we walked. We couldn’t help but wonder—why on edge? Why not flat?
Our path eventually led us to the Palace of the Grand Master, a striking reminder of Rhodes’ medieval glory. Standing before it, we could almost see the knights of old guarding the walls. Once inside, we were even more amazed—the polished limestone floors gleamed, and the massive stone fireplaces filled the rooms with a sense of grandeur. Room after room felt like a passageway through time, and we couldn’t get enough of it.
Later, curiosity nudged us away from the busy streets and into quieter corners of town. That’s where we stumbled upon Ta Mezeklikia, a small café that immediately drew us in. We ordered baklava and cappuccino, and honestly—it was the best baklava we’ve ever had. Sweet, flaky, dripping with warm honey, paired perfectly with creamy, rich coffee. After a long day of exploring, it was the kind of treat that makes you close your eyes and just savor the moment.
By the time we made our way back to the ship, our feet were sore from those unforgettable stones, but our hearts were full. Rhodes isn’t just another stop on an itinerary—it’s a place that wraps you in its history, surprises you with its flavors, and leaves you already planning your return.
Travel tip: bring your most comfortable shoes—your feet will definitely thank you.
