PYP - Pack Your Patience
PYP - Pack Your Patience

One of the biggest travel essentials doesn't take up any room in your suitcase.
It's called PYP - Pack Your Patience.
Travel is booming - and we couldn't be happier.
We see it every month in our agency. Our suppliers continue to report strong demand, cruises are filling further in advance than ever before, and we're now helping clients plan vacations nearly two years ahead. As a travel advisor, that's exciting. It means more people are checking destinations off their bucket lists, reconnecting with family, celebrating milestones, and exploring the world.
But there's another side to all of that excitement.
More travelers mean busier airports. Longer security lines. Fuller cruise terminals. More traffic getting to the port. Popular attractions with larger crowds. Restaurants with waits. And yes...sometimes delayed or canceled flights.
So before you pack your swimsuit, hiking boots, or passport, there's one thing I'd encourage every traveler to pack first:
Patience.
The truth is, many of the things that create stress while traveling are completely outside of your control. Weather happens. Mechanical issues happen. Traffic happens. Cruise ships still leave on time. Airports get busy.
What you can control is how you respond.
When Your Flight is Delayed
Nobody likes seeing that dreaded "Delayed" notice on the departure board, but a little preparation can make a big difference.
Here are a few things to remember:
- Be kind to the airline employees. They didn't create the weather or mechanical issue, and they're usually helping dozens - sometimes hundreds - of frustrated travelers at the same time.
- If your delay becomes significant or your flight is canceled, ask whether meal vouchers, hotel accommodations, or other assistance are available.
- Keep essentials with you in your carry-on, including medications, chargers, and a change of clothes if possible.
- Download books, movies, podcasts, or music before your trip so you have entertainment even if airport Wi-Fi is slow.
- Bring a crossword puzzle, journal, or deck of cards.
- Traveling with children? Bring back some of the classics. Play "I Spy," take turns naming animals or places that start with each letter of the alphabet, tell stories together, or challenge everyone to find the funniest airport sign.
Sometimes those unexpected hours become some of the most memorable moments of the trip.
Long Lines? Expect Them.
Whether you're checking luggage, boarding a cruise, visiting a museum, or waiting for customs, lines are simply part of today's travel experience.
Instead of letting them ruin your mood:
- Arrive with plenty of time instead of rushing.
- Use the opportunity to people-watch - airports and cruise terminals are fascinating places.
- Strike up a conversation with another traveler. You never know what stories you'll hear.
- Stay hydrated and keep a small snack handy.
- Remember that every person in line is just as excited to begin their vacation as you are.
Things Won't Always Go Exactly as Planned
Maybe it rains on your beach day.
Maybe your excursion gets rescheduled.
Maybe your favorite restaurant is fully booked.
Take a deep breath.
Some of the best travel memories happen because plans changed. You wander into a small café you never would have found. You discover a local festival. You meet people you otherwise wouldn't have crossed paths with.
Travel isn't about executing a perfect itinerary.
It's about experiencing the unexpected.
Slow Down and Enjoy the Journey
We often spend months planning a vacation, counting down the days until departure.
Then we arrive and rush from one activity to the next, worried about making every reservation, every show, and every excursion.
Give yourself permission to slow down.
Sit on a bench and watch the world go by.
Listen to a street musician.
Enjoy a coffee without checking the time.
Watch the sunset instead of your phone.
Sometimes the moments you didn't schedule become the ones you'll remember forever.
Remember Why You're Traveling
You're not standing in that airport because you're going to work.
You're there because you're about to experience something new.
You're making memories with family.
Celebrating a milestone.
Crossing a destination off your bucket list.
Seeing a place you've dreamed about for years.
A delayed flight or a long line may be frustrating in the moment, but it shouldn't define your vacation.
So the next time you're packing your suitcase, remember to leave a little room for one more essential.
PYP - Pack Your Patience.
It doesn't weigh anything.
It doesn't cost a penny.
And it just might become the most valuable thing you bring along.
Happy travels,
Tammy & James Doucette
