A Perfect Prelude to Our Azamara Pursuit Cruise: Athens

September 12, 2025 by Tammy Doucette |
Acropolis

There’s something magical about arriving in Athens, especially when you know it’s just the beginning of a larger adventure at sea. On August 11, we touched down in the heart of Greece for our pre-cruise stay before boarding the Azamara Pursuit - and what a perfect start it was.

Our home for the night was Electra Palace Athens, a hotel that impressed us from the moment we walked in. Elegant décor, spacious rooms, circular hallway sand a rooftop pool with jaw-dropping views of the Acropolis made it the ideal place to unwind after a long day of travel.

After settling in, we set out to explore the city’s vibrant streets. One of our favorite moments was pausing on the steps leading up to the Acropolis, enjoying a cold beer as the city buzzed around us. It was such a simple but unforgettable way to experience Athens—part history, part culture, and part everyday life.

Dinner that evening was at Παλαιά Ιθάκη (Old Ithaki Restaurant), a charming spot tucked away from the busy streets. The atmosphere was cozy and welcoming, and the food was exactly what you dream of in Greece: fresh, flavorful, and beautifully prepared. From traditional Greek dishes to local wine, it was the perfect introduction to the city’s culinary scene.

The evening ended with something truly magical: a late swim in Electra Palace’s rooftop pool, gazing out at the Acropolis glowing under the night sky. Floating in the water with that iconic view felt surreal and made us realize just how special Athens really is.

This short stay was the perfect prelude to our cruise—a reminder that sometimes the most memorable travel moments aren’t the grand tours, but the simple experiences that connect you to a destination. Athens gave us exactly that.

🌟 Travel Advisor Tip

If you’re planning a pre-cruise stay in Athens, I highly recommend Electra Palace Athens. Its central location makes exploring easy, the rooftop pool is unforgettable, and the spacious rooms provide a comfortable retreat after a long flight. And don’t miss dining at a local gem like Old Ithaki Restaurant—a wonderful way to enjoy authentic Greek cuisine before setting sail.
