On our Mediterranean voyage aboard the Regal Princess in May of 2022, we embarked on a journey that really touched our hearts and broadened our historical horizons - our adventure to the ancient city of Pompeii. Before our cruise we knew nothing of this city, Naples was on our itinerary and we decided to take an excursion to Pompeii.
From the very moment we set foot in Pompeii, we were captivated. The city, once a bustling hub, buried under volcanic ash from the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79, is an impeccably preserved time capsule of Roman life. The quiet streets whisper secrets of years gone by, leaving us awe-struck as we walked among history.
The Streets Told Their Stories
As we wandered through the streets, the preserved buildings around us, the colorful pieces of artwork painted on floors and walls, the decorative jugs used for wine and water, were testaments to the ingenuity of the Pompeiians. We marveled at the ruts in the road, etched by the wheels of ancient wagons, you could almost picture the wagons on the roads and the people walking across the large stones placed as a walking path to cross the road. It was incredible to see the distinct tracks left behind by the daily hustle and bustle of life in those times.
